Yes, Zipper Orthodontics provides special needs orthodontics (adapted care for patients with developmental or physical disabilities). Our Boca Raton and Boynton Beach offices offer sensory-friendly environments, flexible scheduling, modified treatment plans, and a team trained to work with patients who have autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, sensory processing disorder (SPD -- heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, or touch), and other conditions.

Our Philosophy

Do You Treat Patients with Special Needs?

Yes. At Zipper Orthodontics, we believe that every patient -- regardless of ability or diagnosis -- deserves compassionate orthodontic care adapted to their individual needs.

We understand that a traditional orthodontic office can feel overwhelming for patients with special needs orthodontics (adapted care for patients with developmental or physical disabilities). That is why our Boca Raton and Boynton Beach offices are designed with sensory-friendly features -- adjustable lighting, calming spaces, noise-reducing tools, and visual schedules that help patients feel safe and in control.

Research published in the Journal of Dental Research (2020) shows that patients with developmental disabilities have a higher rate of malocclusion and greater need for orthodontic treatment, yet face more barriers to accessing care. We are here to remove those barriers.

Families across Delray Beach, Coral Springs, Parkland, and Deerfield Beach trust Zipper Orthodontics to provide gentle, inclusive care for patients with a wide range of conditions.

Adjustable lighting, noise-reducing headphones, weighted blankets, and calm waiting areas designed for patients with sensory processing disorder (SPD -- heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, or touch).

Flexible Scheduling

Appointments during quieter times of the day with extra time built in. No rush, no pressure, and pre-visit tours to build familiarity.

Modified Treatment

Every treatment plan is customized to the patient's abilities, comfort level, and sensory preferences. No one-size-fits-all approach.

Extra Patience

Longer appointment times, frequent breaks, positive reinforcement, and behavior guidance techniques. We never rush -- we work at your child's pace.

Parent Communication

Clear updates, guidance, and support before, during, and after each visit. Consistent staff assignments so your child sees familiar faces.

Safe Materials

All materials are BPA-free, biocompatible, and FDA-cleared -- safe and non-toxic for every patient, especially those with chemical sensitivities.

Your Experience

How Are Appointments Different?

We design every visit around your child's comfort -- not a standard schedule. Here is how our approach works from the very first visit.

Step 1 -- Comfort Visit: We start with a low-pressure meet-and-greet so your child can explore the office, meet the team, and get comfortable. No clinical work on the first visit unless everyone is ready.

Step 2 -- Evaluation: When your child is ready, Dr. Zipper conducts a thorough evaluation at a pace that works for them. We use the iTero Element digital scanner instead of traditional impression trays -- no messy putty, no gagging, and a much better experience for sensory-sensitive patients. We use gentle techniques and take breaks as needed.

Step 3 -- Customized Plan: We design a treatment plan tailored to your child's orthodontic needs, sensory preferences, and behavioral accommodation protocols. Our sensory-adapted environment and individualized approach mean we discuss every detail with parents so there are no surprises.

Step 4 -- Gentle Treatment: Throughout active treatment, we provide accommodations like visual schedules, noise-reducing headphones, weighted blankets, and frequent breaks. Appointments happen during quieter times with extra time built in.

Step 5 -- Ongoing Support: We maintain open communication with parents, caregivers, and other healthcare providers throughout treatment.

Special Needs Orthodontics FAQs

Yes. Dr. Zipper and our team have extensive experience working with patients who have autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, sensory processing disorders, and other conditions. We adapt our approach for every patient to ensure a comfortable, positive experience at our Boca Raton and Boynton Beach offices.

Our offices are designed with sensory-friendly features including adjustable lighting, noise-reducing headphones, weighted blankets, and a calm waiting area. We introduce tools and sounds gradually, use visual schedules, and let patients set the pace so they feel safe and in control throughout their visit.

That is completely okay. We schedule longer appointment times, take frequent breaks, and use positive reinforcement to help your child feel comfortable. Our team is trained in behavior guidance techniques, and we never rush -- we work at your child's pace, even if it takes multiple visits to complete a single step.

While orthodontic procedures typically do not require sedation, we can coordinate with your child's pediatric dentist or physician if sedation is recommended for specific steps. We always explore non-sedation comfort strategies first -- and in most cases, our patience-first approach helps patients complete treatment comfortably without sedation.

Yes. All materials we use are BPA-free, biocompatible, and FDA-cleared -- safe and non-toxic for every patient, especially those with chemical sensitivities or allergies. We also use digital scanning instead of chemical impression trays to eliminate additional exposure.

Absolutely. We regularly coordinate with pediatric dentists, physicians, therapists, and other specialists to ensure your child's orthodontic care fits into their overall health plan. Communication between providers leads to better outcomes and a smoother experience for your family.

It depends on the individual. Some patients do well with clear aligners, while others benefit from traditional braces. Dr. Zipper evaluates each patient's needs, dexterity, and comfort level to recommend the best option. We always choose the approach that will be most comfortable and effective for your child.
